Soulkind issue 1

Where it began…

The catalyst for SoulKind issue one was the story of man called David Lemon who walked the entire length of the Zambezi River, alone, to mark his approaching seventieth birthday. When I say alone, he obviously had the abundance of wildlife to keep him company, his encounters with herds of elephant, hippo, a pride of lions and the local people, all experiences he will cherish forever.

Upon listening to David’s tales of adventure and understanding his reasons for taking on, let’s face it, a pretty dangerous task, I realised that there was something special about learning from the mindset of others. What makes people do what they do, what is this unseen trait that drives people forward and can we harness it to help us do extraordinary things too?

Chris and I also flew out to meet Aaron Baker, a recovering quadriplegic from Los Angeles who 20 years post-accident refuses to give in. His incredible documentary ‘Coming to my senses’ follows his 20-mile solo walk across a tract of Death Valley in a demonstration of pure human resilience.

Be willing to face adversity –
things happen for us, not to us.
— Aaron Baker

Whilst out in America, we went to meet James ‘The Iron Cowboy’ Lawrence and his welcoming family. James, a man who ‘redefined impossible’ by completing 50 back-to-back full distance triathlons in the 50 states of America, and recently in 2021 completed his ‘Conquer 100’ project, 100 back-to-back full distance triathlons which he calls ‘defying logic’.

Closer to home to we met explorer Lucy Shepherd whose desire to discover and understand our planet has taken her to some of the most unforgiving places on earth, Jamie McDonald best known for doing worldly adventures dressed up as his alter-ego, Adventureman and Sian Lewis, an award-winning outdoors and travel writer and blogger who focuses on sharing and encouraging beginner-friendly adventures in the wildest corners of Britain. Also featured are Laura Try, Adam Weymouth, Jenny Wordsworth, Pip Stewart and Sean Conway.
